# How Deep Should Mulch Be Around Plants?

The ideal mulch depth is **two to three inches**. This range retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and moderates ground temperature without smothering roots or promoting rot. Equally important: keep mulch pulled back two to three inches from plant stems and tree trunks.

Going too shallow — under an inch — leaves soil exposed to temperature swings and dries out quickly between waterings. Going too deep — four inches or more — can block oxygen from reaching roots and trap excess moisture against the crown, creating conditions for fungal disease and pest activity.

A common mistake called *volcano mulching* involves mounding mulch high against a tree trunk. It looks tidy but slowly damages bark, girdling the tree over time. Always aim for a flat, even layer with a clear gap at the base of any plant or tree.

For best results, refresh mulch once a year as it breaks down and compacts. Organic options like hardwood or pine bark add nutrients to the soil as they decompose — a bonus for long-term plant health.
