# What Type of Sod Is Best for My Yard?

In the Charlotte and Lake Norman region, the best sod for most yards is either Bermuda or Zoysia grass — but the right choice depends on your yard's sun exposure, soil condition, and how you use the space. A shaded yard may call for Fescue instead. Getting the selection right before installation makes a significant difference in long-term results.

## Bermuda Grass

Bermuda is a top choice for full-sun yards with high foot traffic. It establishes quickly, spreads aggressively to fill in bare spots, and holds up well under kids, pets, and entertaining. It goes dormant and browns in winter but greens back up reliably each spring in the Carolinas.

## Zoysia Grass

Zoysia is denser and softer underfoot, making it a popular choice for homeowners who want a manicured, lush look. It's more drought-tolerant once established and handles light to moderate shade better than Bermuda. It does establish more slowly, but the long-term result is a thick, weed-resistant lawn.

## Tall Fescue

For yards with heavy shade or homeowners who want a lawn that stays green through cooler months, Tall Fescue is typically the right answer. It doesn't spread like Bermuda or Zoysia, so it's usually installed at higher density and may need overseeding over time.

## Why a Site Assessment Matters

Choosing sod without evaluating drainage, grading, and soil health can lead to patchy results or sod that simply doesn't take. Proper yard grading and soil prep before installation dramatically improve how well sod establishes and how long it lasts.

Rivers Landscape serves Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, and Mooresville, and offers a free on-site estimate and walk-through to help homeowners choose the right sod and ensure the yard is properly prepared before installation.
